Julie Ann Kodmur • January 16, 2020

There’s a gold rush happening! We received eight gold medals at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. These are terrific results, considering there was a field of 6,700 entries!

Please join us in congratulating winemakers Brooks Painter and Peter Velleno and vineyard manager David Bejar for their hard work.

We will be pouring these wines at the Chronicle’s tasting at Ft. Mason Center in San Francisco on February 15 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Come find us there! Tickets can be purchased at winejudging.com/public-tasting.

Bottle of Castello di Amorosa Gewürztraminer wine with glass and Best of Class award.

Best of Class: 2018 Gewurztraminer, Anderson Valley

Acclaimed wine critic Mike Dunne described this wine as having rose petal aromas with grapefruit, lychee, and peach flavors, finishing with spice.

Winemaker Brooks Painter noted the grapes were grown in Anderson Valley and carefully handled to preserve aromas of rose petals, cinnamon spice, and lychee fruit. The wine is cold fermented in stainless steel and pairs well with strong cheeses, spicy Asian dishes, and sauced white meats.

Mary Davidek, who runs the Royal Food & Wine Pairing Tour, recommends pairing Gewurztraminer with spicy dishes such as Thai or Indian cuisine.

Recipe Date: April 30, 2026 Difficulty: Easy Measurements: Imperial (US) Serving: 1 INGREDIENTS Serata Sangria 3 oz Serata wine 2 oz orange juice 2 oz pineapple juice Fresh grapes & blackberries, halved Splash of sparkling water Ice Additional Garnish (Optional) Fresh herbs for garnish (mint or basil work beautifully) DIRECTIONS For the Serata Sangria , chill all ingredients for at least a half-hour before preparing. Pour into a 10oz glass (or combine servings into a pitcher) : the Serata wine, orange juice, and pineapple juice. Add a handful of the fresh grapes and blackberries for a burst of natural sweetness. Let the mixture sit for at least 10 minutes so flavors can mingle. Add ice and top with a splash of sparkling water for a crisp finish, then garnish with fresh herbs. Stir gently and serve immediately. This easy sangria recipe balances citrus brightness with subtle sweetness, while the sparkling water keeps it light and refreshing. The addition of fresh fruit and herbs enhances both aroma and flavor, making it an ideal summer wine cocktail or brunch drink . Enjoy & Cheers!
