Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Chardonnay grapes harvested from the iconic Bien Nacido Vineyard, a cool climate vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley in Santa Barbara County
Production Notes
“La Rocca” means “the fortress”, and that is what comes to mind when placing your hands on the concrete egg-shaped fermentation vessel used to hand craft this very unique wine. An ancient method uncommonly used by modern wineries, aging in concrete allows the natural lees to impart richness to the wine without the use of oak barrels, thus preserving the purity of flavors in this Chardonnay. This wine was not allowed to go through the secondary malolactic fermentation, in order to maintain a lively acidity and fresh tropical aromatics.
Winemaker Notes
The 2015 vintage was also of high quality, but very low yields in many varieties. The harvest will also be remembered as one of the earliest ever. The relatively dry and warm winter resulted in small clusters of grapes with highly concentrated flavors yielding wines of deep, rich flavors and excellent quality with deep color and lovely fruit aromas. —Brooks Painter, Director of Winemaking
Food Pairing Notes
An excellent lighter bodied Chardonnay to pair with shrimp scampi, calamari, or goat cheese crostini.
