The relatively cool climate of the Russian River Valley allowed for slow ripening of the fruit, resulting in full flavor development and increased complexity. The balanced acidity makes this a great food wine. This wine finishes peppery, with flavors of red and black berries.
Our Zingaro is made from a blend of Zinfandel sourced from 4 growers in the Russian River Valley. The average age of the vines is 50 years, but the important key to understanding “old vines” is that you are always dealing with a complex mixture of vines. As a vineyard ages, underperforming, sick, or dead vines are replaced periodically, meaning there might be an age difference of 70 years between adjacent vines, not to mention that they might be different clones on different rootstocks. A small number of the oldest vines might not even be Zinfandel! The original pioneers in California viticulture were known to have planted other varieties throughout their vineyards so that the grapes would be harvested and fermented together, with the goal of yielding a better quality wine without the extra work of crafting multiple wines only to blend them later. In the case of Zinfandel vineyards these varieties might include Petite Sirah and Carignan. All of these factors contribute to the “field blend”, and give old vine Zinfandel its unique character and complexity.
