Rated 94 points in Wine Spectator Magazine's 2005 California Cabernet Sauvignon retrospective tasting:
"The 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet vintage at age 10 has proven to be a bit of a roller coaster. Many of the wines are very, very good, but there are others that show the imbalance of a supersized crop, with mixed tannin levels. Of the 164 2005 Cabernets I recently tasted blind inWine Spectator's Napa office, 41 earned 90 points or higher, with a total of 112 rated very good or better."
"The second tier of wines also stars veteran Napa vintners whose experience paid off when managing 2005's huge crop. Castello di Amorosa was a relatively new producer that year, but owner Dario Sattui, of the V. Sattui winery family, has been working Napa harvests since the 1970s."
CASTELLO DI AMOROSA Il Barone Napa Valley 2005 Score: 94
A fantastic effort, aging well, this is firm, rich and youthful, brimming with dense, concentrated blackberry and wild berry fruit, touches of crushed rock and fresh earth, and notes of dried herb, cedar and dill. Ends with ripe, chewy tannins. Remarkably persistent on the finish. 2005 California Cabernet blind retrospective (September 2015). Drink now through 2025. 2,000 cases made.—J.L.
The wine has an elegant and complex aroma of black cherry, cassis and black olive with an intense bouquet of cedar, tobacco and dried herbs. In the mouth the wine is rich and flavorful with ample tannins.
♦ 94 Points - James Laube, Wine Spectator "A fantastic effort, aging well, this is firm, rich and youthful, brimming with dense, concentrated blackberry and wild berry fruit, touches of crushed rock and fresh earth, and notes of dried herb, cedar and dill. Ends with ripe, chewy tannins. Remarkably persistent on the finish. 2005 California Cabernet blind retrospective (September 2015). Drink now through 2025. 2,000 cases made." (retrospective tasting, September 2015)
♦ 92+ Points - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Il Barone, which is the winery’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon, tips the scales at a lofty 14.6% natural alcohol that is well hidden beneath a cascade of blackberry, cassis, and blueberry fruit as well as is some new saddle leather and a touch of oak. The wine is fresh, lively, full-bodied, and very youthful for a wine already ten years of age. Nicely textured, thick and juicy, this is a beauty to drink over the next 12-15 years." (retrospective review, June 2015)
♦ 91 Points - International Wine Review “The 2005 vintage of Il Barone exhibits a savory nose with herbal and violet notes and a gorgeous velvet-like palate of rich dark fruit with earth and pepper accents. Somewhat chalky tannins show on the mid-palate and the wine finishes with firm, dry tannins.”
A very flavorful, elegant and structured red wine in the style of high-quality, very limited-production, fine Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the Napa Valley. Excellent long-term ageing potential
Food Pairing Notes
Big and powerful, it pairs well with most red meat-based dishes, wild game, rich, sauced cuisine and flavorful cheeses.
